Taylor Quinn, Assigned Reading, Art Creating a World, 2/10/11

Van Der Leeuw writes in his book that man “does not simply accept the world as he finds it but rather transforms it into his own world”. Art is what is able to reveal to us that there is some other world that we long to be in. C. S. Lewis says “If we discover a desire within us that nothing in this world can satisfy, also we should begin to wonder if perhaps we were created for another world”. Art is able to speak to us and reveal to us a world behind a world. People have a desire to be in a world other than this place because they know that it is broken.

I personally know that this world is a broken place. All I have to do is look in the mirror to know that. When I hear and amazing piece of music, or see a beautiful painting I stand in awe of it. It brings about a desire to be with it. Romans 8:22-23 says “For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body”. That speaks so deeply about me. I know that I was not created to live in this broken world. I was made to be with my Father in Heaven, and that is beautiful.
