Taylor Quinn, Assigned Reading, The Sublime, 2/25/11
In The Nature of Art, we learn that Immanuel Kant talks about the beautiful and the sublime. It says that “the sublime my be described in this way: It is an object (of nature) the representation of which determines the mind to regard the elevation of nature beyond our reach as equivalent to a presentation of ideas”. The sublime is something that is not safe. It is true raw, awesome power. We looked at paintings in class of ships on the water during a storm. The image was chaotic looking. It gave the feeling of distress and fear.
I felt the power of the sublime of nature recently. When the storms hit Newport News, which destroyed other areas with tornados, I was very afraid. I was sitting in my house wondering if me and some friends should move to a dorm where it would be safer. I got in my car in the midst of the poring rain, thunder, and lightning. I got some people in my car because we decided it would be safe to be in a dorm. Driving the very short distance was terrifying. I was sure I my car was going to be struck by lightning. The sublime of nature was too much to comprehend that night.
