Brandon Webster "The Moral Sense" Outside Reading
Wilson claims our generation is materially better off than our parents but spiritually/morally worse. He argues the foundation for family has greatly weakened and thus society has weakened. He says the creation of “no fault” divorces during the 60’s was one of the worst things to happen to American society. He claims ‘no fault’ divorces weaken relationships because it breaks trust and eliminates the idea of long-term commitment. He argues that it should be harder for spouses to divorce one another because the mental damage caused to the children is not fixable, and thus this affects their relationships later in life (harming society even more). However, I do not believe this is the case. I believe that it’s much more detrimental for children to live in homes where their parents are in constant conflict. If all a child sees is their parents fighting and unhappy, then they will equate marriage with unhappiness and I believe that will affect relationships in American society more than no fault divorces.
