In my Human Behavior class we have discussed brain development in early childhood. According to Piaget, children between the ages of 2 and 6 years old are in the Preoperational Stage of Thought. Children in this stage have developed the capacity to understand symbolic function (the idea that something can stand for or represent something else). Through the recognition of symbolic function children are able to expand their imaginative capacities. However, Children in this stage are limited by rigidity of thought and semi logical reasoning. They are not able to take the perspectives of others because of egocentrism. Children are egocentric in that they think that everyone knows what they know and sees what they see. They are unable to distinguish their view from the views of others. This must have implications for what young children consider to be beautiful. If a child is not able to consider others’ point of view, they may not be able to fully appreciate artistic expressions.
It is with brain maturation that we are able to grasp what beauty really is.
