I have been doing a lot of thinking about my paper, which is on the Art of God and I discovered something very interesting. Art is the footprint of our very being. It is the result of our being’s being on the planet. That is to say that art is what we do, say, and most obviously create. Art can be any manner of things as long as we create it and express something. In many ways, everything that humanity does is in some way art. Sometimes the art that we express is beautiful and other times it is destructive. As humans, we are not alone however. There is an Artist transcendent above the artist and an Art that allows art. This Artist has given us the tools to be artists with him. The natural world is the canvas on which we paint with artificial brushstrokes. The natural world is unique because it is living and dynamic. According to many creation myths throughout religions and cultures God has created the world ex nihilo, or out of nothing. The Jewish and Christian traditions support this claim with the account of Genesis. This concept is extremely powerful as we investigate what is special about the Art that God has made. If we apply this definition of all art being the footprint of our very being, then the natural world and what God has created in nature is in fact an extension of God’s being to humanity. I like this understanding of art being the footprint of our being. It is truly intriguing to think that God may have extended himself out to us in this fashion. Is it possible that we could be living in an extension of God’s very being?? I know that many would say that creation is just God creating but any art that I have produced I feel extremely connected to. It is not simply creation, but I have placed everything for reason and purpose. When I do this, my creations are beautiful and purposeful.
