"The Lesson"--Maya Angelou I keep on dying again.Veins collapse, opening like the
Small fists of sleeping
Children.
Memory of old tombs,
Rotting flesh and worms do
Not convince me against
The challenge. The years
And cold defeat live deep in
Lines along my face. They dull my eyes, yet
I keep on dying,
Because I love to live.
I read this poem and I remember lost friends, or those who have been punished for their mistakes. So this poem helps remind me as to why people should learn from others mistakes. That the will to live should be greater than making rash decisions, that bring pleasure only for temporary amounts of time. This poem is written mainly for children, but I feel that we continue to learn throughout our lifetime and that this is a strong reminder of how we should live our life. We can still enjoy life, but if we want to enjoy a full life then it is best to learns from others mistakes, as to not make that mistake your own. I like that Ms. Angelou has created poems that run smooth like honey off the tongue but still send a powerful message to her audience. It is short, sweet, melodic and intense all at the same time.
