Sarah Ward: Van der Leeuw's Music and Religion

Since the beginning of time, music has always been an important aspect of the religious experience. Music and religion are often parallel each other; many believe you cannot have one without the other. Using music in worship allows the worshiper to connect with God (or gods-whoever they may be) on a deeper and more intimate level. Using words connected with music allows the individual to feel as though they are having a relational conversation.

According to Van der Leeuw, "new life always unfolds when a strong awareness of being called by God and being bound to him is combined with the determination to go out into the world and praise God with music." He feels as though religion cannot exist without music and vice versa. Music is an integral part of the worship experience and without the musical aspect of a worship service, the service would just be a lecture. Music enables the worship service to be personal, enjoyable and meaningful, while still allowing the true act of worship to shine through.
