Brandon Webster "The Holy" Van Der Leeuw

Pg. 5 "The awe which the completely other awakens in us breaks down at once into feelings of fear, of dread, of reverence, of smallness, indeed of nothingness, and at the same time a feeling of being drawn in, of joyous astonishment, of love."

This is what we expect in regard to the ultimate other, the spirit we can not see. This sets off the idea of the holy which we can't see but we place so much faith in. We submit to the almighty other, because of fear, dread, reverence, smallness and etc. People fear the almighty in everyday life. We bow down to this because our fear is stirred by what we learn from studying the bible and what not. Somethings shouldn't be done in reference to the beliefs we get from the bible. Because of the bible we fear that if we do those things that we will result in punishment from the holy other. Even though we believe in the receiving of punishment we also are joyous from what we believe. This joy we gain from our beliefs and religious practices grant us this love. A sense of spiritual love we gain from the holy love.
