Today we talked about the empty space. There is so much space in our minds and also in the world. Dr. Redick talked about how tall buildings reveal that space. These buildings tower in the sky and actually by taking up that space show us the space that we have. It is in this filling that we space is unconcealed. I have been looking up for the past week in wonder due to this concept. It has been awesome to look at the buildings on campus, the trees and all things that tower above me in absolute bewilderment to how much room there is in the world. It has helped me to realize this of myself: I am small and God is big.
Van Der Leeuw uses this same concept on words and music. He talks about how music and words are similar because words cause empty space to be filled and music causes time to be measured and understood. Without word, we would be without any concept of knowledge and understanding. Scripture stands as the tall structure that fills up all sight of anything else. It fills our empty space so much that we can’t even begin to understand or see it completely. Music also keeps the passing of time. It is here that we find rhythm and beat. Every second is found in rhythm and is therefore apart of music and helps us understand the passing of time that Van Der Leeuw is talking about. Without buildings, words, and music, the empty spaces of our lives would be just that and we would have no concept of anything greater then ourselves.
