With all the talk of creation in art I was reminded of a powerful quote from G.K. Chesterton’s book Orthodoxy. He writes, “But perhaps God is strong enough to exult in monotony. It is possible that God says every morning, “ Do it again” to the sun; and every evening, “ Do it again” to the moon. It may not be automatic necessity that makes all daisies alike; it may be that God makes every daisy separately, but has never tired of making them.”
I love this quote because it speaks to me about the art of God. This concept has stuck with me ever since I read it. God did not create the world but he is constantly creating the world. He is making and holding everything together. This concept is so powerful to me and makes me sit in wonder at how amazing God’s creative ability is. God made the world as an extension of his character and his will and consistently puts his will into it. I love this idea and what it means about love. Love is not instantaneous but is continuous. It is laborious but not in such a way that it is a burden or boring. God has not tired of making and doing these things. I think that is the beauty in creation and the example that this quote teaches us. We should not tire of the monotony of life. Do we realize how rare it is to meet a new person. The things that we get used to are actually quite different and made different by God. If each flower is made individually by God and each day is directed by him, then how much more special are we whom God has created in his image. This is the beauty of life.
