Kelly Barry- False Beauty

In today's society, there is a strong emphasis placed on beauty. Looking good is just as, if not more so, important as getting a job, paying bills or going grocery shopping. But what is it that is considered aesthetically pleasing in our world? In the 1920s, a women tried her best to mimic movie icons; doing their hair, trimming their waists and reddening their lips. In the 21st century, not much has changed. Yet women go to even greater extremes now, forfeiting money to breast implants, fake tans and lip injections, all in an attempt to resemble a Greek goddess.
Since the ways in which to attain beauty have changed it seems also that was is considered beautiful has changed with it. In hopes of looking like a model, men and women alike buy into the ideas of beauty as dictated by society.
I propose a more formal approach to beauty: the search for what is true, since what is true is beautiful. This would mean a lack of artificiality (tans, makeup, injections, etc). A person should not change themself to fit a false mold of aesthetics. True beauty shows forth when there is a renouncement of the facade of what looks good, as portrayed all around us. Beauty takes place on the inside; even the most physically attractive person can have a dark, ugly soul.
