Kelly Barry- A New Appreciation

For my final post, I would like to leave off with how this class has impacted me. To be honest, I was rather surprised when I came into class one day and we were watching a clip of a tribal village performing an exorcism (a video that played several more times because of its comic nature). I had never really considered something like that to fall under the category of "beautiful", but then again, my conception of beauty was certainly skewed.
I remember seeing the clip from 'American Beauty' when the film maker records the movements of a plastic bag in the wind. it was so much more than just a piece of trash getting tossed around. It was symbolic on a totally different level. After that, I was unable to look at any plastic bag in the same way again.
While my views on modern art haven't changed much (I don't particularly care for it), I can still recognize its artistic value.
Over spring break, my boyfriend and two of our friends took a trip to the museums in Washington D.C. (something I had never done before). I was overwhelmed as the exhibits, ranging from prehistoric creatures to exotic animals to gen stones. The marvels of the natural world truly took my breath away. Because of what I had learned so far in this class, I was able to appreciate things for more than just their face value. I read into their backgrounds and received an ever deeper appreciation for their aesthetic purpose.
My most rewarding aspect of the class, however, was writing the final paper. I examined the Artwork of God and concluded that humanity is God's greatest masterpiece. Working on the paper really allowed me to examine my Catholic faith and see parts of it that I had always taken for granted (like the creation story, for example).
I truly have enjoyed being in this class and will take what I have learned and put it to good use.
