Kathryn Evering: I want to be a Marine
My grandfather was a Marine, my father is a Marine, and now its my turn. As a future(May15) college graduate I want to enlist as a Marine. I do not wish to be an officer, yet, I do not want to go to grad-school, yet, and I do not to become a teacher. People ask me what I'm doing, they look at me as some tiny five foot short girl with a college degree and excellent work background but I want to be a Marine. We've discussed in class about the beauty behind what moves us, whether it be the beating of drums, a painting or a poem, but what moves me to becoming a Marine? It is not the idea behind a beautiful death, like Ajax or other ancient Greeks, but the flag of America. I see the flag and I think of our national anthem that plays on repeat in my head. The visual of the flag and the words of the anthem fulfill me with a sense of pride and happiness. I am an a American, and I believe that the best way to represent my feelings is to put on that uniform and make a commitment. The uniform itself is also its own work of art. Everyone strives to conform and create a polished and clean look. When I think of art or dance and then think of Marines I picture 8th and I, silent drill patrol. We've all seen those videos and I am fascinated, I love watching them. The individuals who participate in those films have drowned out their personal differences to come together to create a common image to create a representation of the Marine Corps through uniform and through the beat of their drilling. I know it may not be typical art per say but I believe it is beautiful.
