I thought I would write a blog about my opinions of art and its role in contemporary society. Taking aspects from what we have learned in this class combined with my own understandings, I would say art is needed for society. It feeds peoples souls when other means cannot. What saddens me then is the lack of what I would argue to be true art that is seen in American society.
The only “art” that exists, is through students of the fine arts. But this is not a requirement to be an artist! If anything one should view this scenario of the radical secularization of art into a trade. And yet, it is not recognized as a trade because of the “magical” capabilities art possesses. The fact of the matter is that everything can be art, and everyone can be the artists. But our minds are not driven to be creative and expressive.
I might add I am a fan of brave new world by Huxley. No one has the desire to be the artist in our society because really, that’s not what our society is about. Its much more modeled on a modern industrial process of efficiency and productability.
Art though separates something from the realm which people are always caught in. It highlights a uniqueness of something different that becomes special or admired in contrast to daily life.
I would argue that the only true art, besides the classic fine arts of museums and scholarly artists, is the underground art. Graffiti and open mic poetry and music would be the best examples. These expressions of art are that of art for art’s sake, rather than profit. I as well believe that these communities of underground art are greatly beneficial to the community as a whole in forming a body of culture within that community. An artists community is ever changing and challenging the world as humans should. We are beings that strive to make heads of tails of are surroundings and are ever trying to get to the deeper reality of things. Art, certainly, helps this cause. This is human culture.
