As we said in class today, art is an artist's answer to his perception of the world. In order to understand it and interact with it, the artist stands back and creates a new world on canvas from what he sees in the real world. The real world is viewed by his mind's eye and his personal experiences alter what he feels from it. For example, someone who has a fear of spiders may draw a spider with blood dripping from it's fangs, while someone else may make it cartoon-like and less intimidating.
We also went over differences between the original and new worlds. The original world is always in a state of flux or change. The new world is solidified in time. We have control over it. It is static, and therefore comforting. I am interested to get more into this concept, since I tend to feel like I am in very little control over my world.
Interestingly, Plato thought the opposite was true, where the original world was without flux and he created a set of rules to explain common phenomena.
