Taylor Quinn, Outside Reading, Phenomenology, 3/3/11

I read an article entitled “Understanding Phenomenology” by Anne Flood. It says that “Phenomenology is a philosophic attitude and research approach. Its primary position is that the most basic human truths are accessible only through inner subjectivity, and that the person is integral to the environment”. We can use Phenomenology to gain an understanding of art. We can understand what is being revealed to us in art through Phenomenology.

I used Phenomenology to understand the emotions of a Seminole Woman in a painting. In the picture the women stands in the center of the painting holding a baby. She is surrounded by modern America. Her eyes are closed as she is surrounded by modern chaos. With Phenomenology I understand that she or we are out of place with the world and that all has been taken from us. We are the last of a dying generation. Through Phenomenology I was able understand her emotions.
