Adam Rasmussen: Music and Words

Van Der Leeuw talks about the word and music. He says music exalts the word before destroying it. At first I didn’t understand but after thinking about it makes more sense. Kip explained that Van Der Leeuw was talking about the limitations of the word. Words are temporary and can only take us so far into beauty. Van Der Leeuw argues that the music can take us much farther and that it uses the word to get there. The music brings the word to a higher level and brings it to our attention, then it destroys it. The word is only temporary and the music continues on into beauty, taking us farther than before.
