Nicole Voyles Phenomenological Approaches to Interactions. 1/20/11

Reductionism is bad so I learned today. Basically, reductionism is the act of taking away context for an object. To take away the grass from the soil is to say it has no affect on it when it is the anchor and provider of half it's sustenance. Similarly, the object in the world needs context to be understood. Perhaps that is why we strive to see everything in our world and universe: maybe we are trying to get our proverbial context so we can understand and be understood by others.
As far as class goes though, a viewer must be able to look to his own experiences to give context to the art he's seeing. Everything from the house you were raised in to the color of your skin and heredity changes the way you interact with the world. Even the perfume your mother wore could have an impact on an art piece. Context changes everything. Whether you participate vicariously or directly, the way you feel about art and its impact on you depends on your past experiences building up to the moment of interaction.
