In chapter 9 on The Nature of Art by Thomas E. Wartenberg, Sigmund Freud wrote, “happy people never make phantasies, only unsatisfied ones. Unsatisfied wishes are the driving power behind phantasies”. I’m not going to say that I have never while sitting in traffic on I-64 thought how nice it would be to win that 32 million dollar jackpot and all of the things I could do, and would do, if I won that money, but after I’m back to reality I always reassure myself that I would not need that exorbitant amount of money. I know that I will be completely fulfilled and happy with whatever and however I end up, be it a penniless artist, or a well-off doctor. Even though I may have sat for a moment in thought about something I have a hard time even conceiving becoming truth, it does not detract from my ability to realize reality. I think that many artists are able to put themselves in this alternate reality, a sort of dream world where they can realize their wishes without being dependent on them, and this is where they are able to channel their work.
