Julia Craig: The Samaritan Woman: John 4: 4-18

So Jesus has been traveling for a long time and decides to take a break by a well in Samaria. It is noon time and extremely hot. In comes the Samaritan woman. Back then the traditional time to draw water is either in the morning or at night because it is the most cool and drawing water is a challenging and strenuous task. So the fact that the woman comes to draw at noon is odd. She comes at this time because she is ashamed of the fact that she is a single Samaritan woman both of which were extremely looked down upon back then. When she woman approaches, Jesus asks her for a drink of water. She is shocked that he, a Jewish man, would ask her, a Samaritan woman, for a drink of water. He replies, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and he would have given you living water.” Jesus is basically saying that she should not think of Him as a Jew but as the Son of God and so she should be asking Him a drink of water and He would give her living water. Living water is eternal life that quenches our thirst to be filled by something. He then tells her to go get her husband; even though, he knows she does not have one husband but several men in her life. She is filling her life with men and trying to quench that thirst that only the Lord can fill. We are exactly like this woman. We always try to quench our thirst with worldly things like sex, drugs, alcohol, sports, grades, friends etc etc. But in reality, the only thing that can fill that hole in out heart is the Lord. We have a NEED and the only one that can help us is the Lord.
