Julia Craig: Statue: The Ecstasy~

In class we looked at the statue called The Ecstasy. There is a lot going on in this statue as well as a lot of emotion portrayed within it. Saint Teresa is lying on her back. An angel is hovering above her. Saint Teresa isn’t even looking at the angel. Her eyes are focused on the heavens. It appears that she is having a connection with God. Her posture shows she is being over-powered, weak, exhausted, and surrendering. There is an element of pain in the scene. She may be having a vision at this time. The angel is getting ready to throw and arrow. He is smiling and smug because he may be giving her her destiny. He is about to “pierce her with truth.” There is a lot in this scene that we are able to relate to. There may be times in our lives that we feel like we cannot go on anymore and just look to God for help. The title Ecstasy also plays a role in a subjective experience. Ecstasy means pain, overwhelmed with my own nothingness in the face of it all. Perhaps the angel is just the truth that we do not want to see but must. It may be painful for us at first, but the aftermath may mean eternal life.
