Sarah Firth, Beauty of Symbols

Symbols, they are every where! They are forms of communication for anything from traffic control to secret societies such as the mysterious free masons. They are prevalent in religious art, tattoos, and even literature is composed of symbols. If you think about it art is used to communicate the artists vision so all art can be categorized as abstract symbols. As Godfrey Blount says in his book The Science of Symbols, symbols are made to convey the thoughts of individuals and the feelings that they want to express. Many paintings and songs hold a symbolic diary of the feelings of an artist and there thoughts on their situation in life. Sometimes, Blount says, symbols are meant to be suggestions or reminders. This parallels with many a lot of art such as many films of today that contain product placement that gently remind viewers of their products existence through out the entire movie. There is also some media that lightly suggest messages with political undertones. Much of art reminds us of beauty, whether it is the beauty of the natural world that many can not seem to reach in their cramped cubicles or the beauty of the world that one sees everyday.
