Drummond Dawson - Required Reading #3

On page 140 of Sacred and Profane Beauty light in literature is briefly mentioned. Until this, I never really thought about light being present in literature. Of course I have seen it in paintings but for it to be infused in a poet, perplexes me. I think one of the ways this is possible is through symbolism. Light mostly means a new beginning or re-birth, so for a piece of literature to express this is thought-provoking. Obviously another way to create light in literature or poetry is through religious cues. A supernatural light, is mentioned in the book and is probably the most common in literature in term of religious topics. Also anything that is mentioned in the poem that brings up God reminds us of his light or the potentiality to given a chance for re-birth in heaven.
