Need to define Art

Subject: Need to define Art

Topic of my choice

There is much controversy around the definition of art. This lack of a definition creates confusion and misinterpretation in learning about art, as without a definition we don’t know what art is. It is considered that art didn’t exist in Jewish culture. I chose this topic as brings to light the need for a definition of what art is. Judaism, contrary to popular belief, has as history of artistic tradition. This misconception is derived form the lack of understanding what defines art. Art is more than just “fine arts” and extends into the merely decorative art that exists in Jewish culture. Art is more than what appears on a canvas. Art is decorative pieces, sandcastles, and even manuscripts. This is related to the course theme of experiencing art as it defines art as more than just canvas paintings but as anything creatively created by man in the intention of expression or representation. With this knowledge, we are able to see the art and beauty in more than once considered.
