Taylor Quinn, My Choice, American Beauty Scene, 1/21/11
We watched in class a short clip from the movie American Beauty. In the scene we see a young man and woman watching a video that the guy made. It was video that he took when he filmed a bag dancing in the wind. That moment spoke to the core of his being. It revealed to him this whole other world. The bag danced with him begging him to play with it. That was the day he relaxed that there was this entire life behind things. It showed him that there was no reason for him to ever be afraid. The video helps him to remember. He says that at times that there is some much beauty in the world he feels that he cannot take it, and he feels that his heart is going to cave in.
I cried when I saw that video because it revealed to me that same life giving force that bacons me to a place of quite and calm beauty. I realize that this is the intersubjective moment that we long to have. It is the ultimate connection to the beautiful, showing us this world behind the world. A world that we long to live in.
