Julia Craig: Beauty - be not caused - It is - Emily Dickinson

Beauty - be not caused - It Is -

Chase it, and it ceases -

Chase it not, and it abides -

Overtake the Creases

In the Meadow - when the Wind

Runs his fingers thro’ it -

Deity will see to it

That You never do it -

This poem makes me feel wanting. It’s saying that beauty cannot be captured because the moment you pursue it, it ceases. Then, in my opinion it’s saying that the wind can run its fingers through the meadow and the beauty within the meadow but a ‘deity’ or a creator figure has made it so we can never touch beautiful and feel it in the way we want to. I feel that is true to some extent - we can only see and experience physical manifestations of beauty with our limited perception. And we are always wanting more beauty and to understand and grasp beauty, but we cannot. However, I do think we can sometimes feel beauty within us, and how can someone tell us that is that not just as real as knowing and understanding beauty?
