In my other philosophy class I studied Epictetus and the stoic philosophy. They definitely had an interesting perspective on the arts. For the Stoics, everything was just a matter of perception. So really anything could be beautiful if you just decide to view it as beautiful. So that pile of garbage in the street could be considered beautiful to the Stoic philosopher, if you decide to view it as such. Another philosopher we studied in my other class was Plato (we touched on him in the beginning of this class as well). My favorite part of his philosophy on aesthetics is “art as imitation.” Plato believes that everything in the world is just a copy of the form of the object (the ideal object). Since art is typically a reproduction of an object, art is thus a copy of a copy of a form, making it even less real. It’s funny how half the philosophers think art reveals truth while the other half think art conceals truth. And that’s the truth.
