Sarah Firth 4/18/11 How Beauty affects us, People.

The beautiful people of this world don’t know how good they have it. It’s supposedly been found that they get 4 to 5% pay increase from ugly people, they get hired more easily and even babies like them more. No wonder people who are less attractive get down in the dumps. But it is not just the benefits of the beautiful that has such adverse affects on the homely. Plain people feel ten times plainer when surrounded by those who are so much more beautiful (i.e. movies or Playboy or any place that a person’s job is to look attractive). Articles on psychology say that a man who previously views a Playboy will score him self as less in love with a significant other then if he had not seen the playmates images. (http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/200107/why-i-hate-beauty). So, beauty has a death grip on love, money, successes, and self confidence. How do the unsightly survive? Some of the perks of being plain may not be viewed as such, depending on a persons preference. For example, those who are less attractive do not have as much attention on them and are less likely to be the object of envy and desire. Another benefit is that those who are less attractive are less diluted; not everyone is bending over backwards to see them smile a little. A person of lesser beauty would have a more realistic and grounded approach to the world around them because they would have to work harder for every accomplishment. In the long run a less attractive person may actually be more educated, more successful or at least self made. If hard times fall on both an ugly person and an attractive person it may be easier for a less attractive person to pick them selves up and keep on rolling.
