Jacqueline Thornley:Music and Religion (Class Reading #3)

On page 225 of Sacred and Profane Beauty, Van Der Leeuw poses the question of the connection between music and religion. He goes on to describe how religion needs singing almost as much as it needs the word but that singing outside of religion can be dangerous. Van Der Leeuw also describes how religion can be found within music. I can definitely see where he’s coming from. It seems like certain types of situations call for certain types of music. When exercising, most people listen to something that’s going to motivate them and get them up and moving. When trying to relax, you would expect to hear soft, calming music. Likewise, certain music can bring us closer to God and religion, or, perhaps push us away.
